Frequently asked questions
- Which areas can I compare?
- Canada, the 13 provinces and territories, and the 40 census metropolitan areas. Statistics Canada publishes the crime rate and the Crime Severity Index on the same basis for all of them, so they compare fairly. Smaller towns are reported by police service and have their own pages.
- Does a lower crime rate mean an area is safer?
- Not on its own. The rate counts crimes reported to police, mostly theft and mischief, and divides them by residents. Areas that draw many visitors look higher, and risk depends far more on the neighbourhood and circumstances than on an area average. The Crime Severity Index weights offences by seriousness and can tell a different story.
