Download CSVFrequently asked questions
- What is the safest city in Canada in 2025?
- Of Canada's 40 census metropolitan areas, Saguenay, QC had the lowest police-reported crime rate in 2025: 2,973 Criminal Code incidents per 100,000 people, −46.8% compared with Canada (5,585). It was followed by Sherbrooke, QC (3,134) and Trois-Rivières, QC (3,417).
- Is the ranking the same when crimes are weighted by seriousness?
- Not exactly. By the Crime Severity Index, which weights each offence by its seriousness, Barrie, ON comes first (46.9).
- What is a census metropolitan area?
- A city of at least 100,000 people with its surrounding municipalities, as defined by Statistics Canada. Crime data for a metro area combine every police service that works in it, so neighbourhoods and suburbs within one area can differ a lot.
- Does a low crime rate mean a city is safe?
- Not on its own. The rate counts crimes reported to police, mostly theft and mischief, and divides them by residents. Cities that draw many shoppers, commuters or tourists look worse than they are, and risk depends far more on the neighbourhood and circumstances than on the metro average.
