Motor Vehicle Theft in Canada

Why Car Theft Is Surging and What You Can Do

The Motor Vehicle Theft Crisis

Motor vehicle theft in Canada has surged dramatically since 2021, increasing 34% nationally. In 2023, over 105,000 vehicles were stolen — roughly one every 5 minutes.

This reverses a two-decade decline. From 2000 to 2020, auto theft had dropped by approximately 40% thanks to improved vehicle security. The recent spike is driven by organized crime networks exporting stolen vehicles overseas.

How Cars Are Stolen

Relay Attacks (Keyless Theft): Criminals use signal amplifiers to extend the range of key fobs inside your home, tricking the car into thinking the key is nearby. This is the dominant method for modern vehicles.

OBD Port Reprogramming: Criminals access the On-Board Diagnostic port to program a blank key.

Tow and Load: Some vehicles are simply towed or loaded onto flatbed trucks.

Key Theft: Traditional method — stealing the actual keys from homes or victims.

Most Stolen Vehicles

The most stolen vehicles in Canada tend to be:

  • Honda CR-V
  • Lexus RX series
  • Ford F-150
  • Toyota Highlander
  • Range Rover

SUVs and trucks are disproportionately targeted because of their high resale value in overseas markets, particularly West Africa and the Middle East.

Prevention Tips

  • Store key fobs in a Faraday bag to block relay attacks
  • Install a steering wheel lock (visible deterrent)
  • Use an aftermarket GPS tracker
  • Park in well-lit areas or enclosed garages
  • Consider a port lock for the OBD port
  • Check if your vehicle is on the most-stolen list
  • Enable any built-in security features

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is car theft increasing in Canada?

The increase is primarily driven by organized crime networks that steal vehicles for export to overseas markets. Modern keyless entry systems have also created new vulnerabilities that criminals exploit with relay devices.

Where do stolen cars go?

Many stolen vehicles are shipped overseas via container ships, primarily to West Africa and the Middle East. Others are re-VINed (given new identification numbers) for domestic resale or stripped for parts.

Will my insurance cover a stolen car?

Comprehensive auto insurance typically covers vehicle theft. However, premiums have increased significantly in high-theft areas, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area and Montreal.

What is a Faraday bag?

A Faraday bag is a pouch lined with metallic material that blocks electromagnetic signals. Storing your key fob inside one prevents relay attacks by criminals with signal amplifiers.

Which province has the most car theft?

Ontario and Quebec have the highest absolute numbers of motor vehicle thefts. The Port of Montreal is a major exit point for stolen vehicles being shipped overseas.
