How to read this map

Each area takes the figures of the police service that covers it, from Statistics Canada’s police-reported crime tables. Where one regional service polices several towns, they share one rate. Grey areas are policed by a rural RCMP detachment or a provincial police force whose figures cover a wider region, so they have no rate of their own.

Rates are Criminal Code incidents, excluding traffic, per 100,000 residents. Colours are set against the Canadian rate of 5,585. Areas with many visitors and few residents, such as a downtown core, have higher rates.
